The IIC at 50
It’s been a special year for the IIC as we celebrate our 50th anniversary. That we are going stronger than ever is a tribute to our members and participants, who value opportunities we provide to discuss and learn about the wide-ranging policy and regulatory issues in the digital age, and to our hard-working staff who put together our events and communications materials. Not least in the latter is a website – iicom50.org – which describes the history of the IIC and a timeline of events and topics that we have covered over 50 years, including of course in-depth in Intermedia. The IIC was initially formed as the International Broadcasting Institute (IBI), and was first concerned with satellite broadcasting at a time when people worried about the impact of mass media, in echoes of the calls to curtail misinformation and rein in the power of online platforms. It was also the year that the fledgling internet was born, and a few years later, the name change to the IIC signalled the convergence of issues under the “telecoms, media and technology” (TMT) banner. Telecoms especially came to the fore, and as Stephen Unger argues in this issue of Intermedia, the biggest ever regulatory decision was, just over 50 years ago, to allow the Carterfone device to connect to the phone network in the US, starting the age of liberalisation. Today, the digital era underpins and disrupts almost every human activity and no matter what sector you are in – and that also means outside of TMT – the IIC’s mission is more relevant that ever.
